USA field hockey team includes UD’s Evans

Katie Evans
8:56 a.m., July 28, 2005--University of Delaware junior forward Katie Evans has been selected to the USA Field Hockey national under 21 team that will compete in the Women’s Junior World Cup from Sept. 14-25 in Santiago, Chile.

Evans scored three goals and had a team-high 12 assists for UD last season, helping lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens to a record of 15-7, a Colonial Athletic Association championship and a berth in the NCAA Division I national championship tournament.

Evans was among 18 players and seven alternates selected to the national team after elite team trials held July 21-24 at Penn State University. Because of the timing of the Junior World Cup, she will miss part of UD’s fall season.

The national team is coached by two-time Olympian and current University of Michigan assistant coach Tracey Fuchs. The Junior World Cup includes 16 teams, and South Korea is the defending champion. USA is seeded ninth and will compete in the same pool as top seed The Netherlands, No. 8 seed England and No. 16 seed Zimbabwe.

Evans, an apparel design major, has been a two-year standout for UD Head Coach Carol Miller. As a freshman in 2003, she started all 21 games and ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 21 points on eight goals and five assists.

UD will open the 2005 season with a trip to California, where the Hens will face Pacific University, the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University.
