UD softball team takes 2 from Delaware State

1:14 p.m., March 31, 2005--The Fightin’ Blue Hens softball team swept a doubleheader from Delaware State University, winning 3-1 in the opener and taking the nightcap 5-4, in eight innings, Wednesday, March 30, at the Hornets Nest in Dover.

Senior Jenn Joseph, whose record improved to 3-8, tossed a two-hitter in the opening game, facing only 23 batters, while fanning eight and walking one Hornet batter.

The Blue Hen offense collected six hits in the opener, including two each for Allison Borchers and Barbara Traynor, who also drove in a run. Michelle Plant and Lauren Gardner also singled.

In the second game, Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead early on, but the Hornets answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. The Hens responded in the top of the fourth, with a single by Kimberly Williams and a two-run homer by Natalie Savana.

Delaware broke a 2-2 deadlock, when Ralston scored an unearned run to give the Hens a 5-4 lead. Carolynn Sloat, who pitched the complete game, held the Hornets scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, while improving her record to 8-5. Offensively, Katie Lee joined Joseph, Gardner and Savona in collecting two hits each.

The Blue Hens return to Colonial Athletic Association action this weekend, with a three-game series at UNC Wilmington. The Hens and the Seahawks play a double header beginning 2 p.m., Saturday, April 2, with a single game starting at noon, Sunday, April 3.
