Student-Athlete Day draws spirited crowd

3:21 p.m., April 21, 2005--There was a large and spirited turnout for the annual University of Delaware Student-Athlete Day, held Monday evening at Rullo Stadium and featuring a variety of events for participants in Fightin’ Blue Hens varsity sports.

The event, which was sponsored by the UD Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), included games such as arm wrestling, pie eating, tug of war, dizzy bat relay, water balloon toss and a limbo contest. There was a live disc jockey, food provided by Dining Services and an appearance by the mascot, YoUDee.

The UD cheerleading squad turned out in force and helped lead the rest of their fellow athletes in the evening’s festivities.

"This is the biggest turnout we’ve ever had. We had great participation from all the athletes that came, and everyone stayed, so it was great," Sarah Bochet, a senior on the women's track team who helped coordinate the event, said.

"We started talking about this in September," Bochet said after falling in a fierce arm wrestling match to SAAC President Kelley Pastic, a senior on the sofball team. “At each meeting, we set a goal, like planning the games and getting the DJ. We all pitched in and just split up the work."

"This was a lot of fun with good people. It's all about friendship and having fun while being with your fellow athletes," sophomore Steve Woltman of the men's lacrosse team said.

"Being a freshman here at UD, Student-Athlete Day was a great experience for me. I'm glad I came," Jenn Shemtob of the women's soccer team said.

"It's a golden objective of SAAC to promote good sportsmanship among the student athletes, and tonight is the largest turnout we've ever had, so that shows that the tradition is growing," Sue Groff, SAAC faculty adviser, said.

The University and the UD SAAC attempt to schedule the event as close as possible to National Student Athlete Day on April 6, but because of conflicts with schedules, it was moved to a day when the spring teams did not have any games.
