CoSIDA recognizes UD’s Geib, Stephens

11:15 a.m., May 31, 2005--Two University of Delaware seniors, All-American field hockey player Leah Geib and record-holding swimmer Sara Stephens, have been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America All-Academic Team for District 2.

Geib, a communication major, was named to the first team for the second straight season. Stephens, an elementary education major, was named to the second team. The 10 members of the first team are eligible for the national Academic All-American team.

To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must have a grade point average of at least 3.2. District 2 includes all NCAA Division I schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Geib was a four-year starter for the nationally ranked Fightin’ Blue Hens field hockey team, which during her career had a record of 52-32. In 2004, the Hens went 15-7, won the Colonial Athletic Association championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988. Geib was named all-conference four times, all-region three times and second team National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American in 2004.

A communication major with a 3.929 grade point average, Geib twice was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in field hockey and also was a member of the NFHCA National Academic team.

Stephens was a four-year standout in several events for the Hens, helping lead the team to 29 dual meet victories through the course of her career. A two-year captain, she set five UD records, including individual marks in the 100 butterfly (56.04) and 200 butterfly (2:03.26). She had 18 top five finishes in the CAA championship meets and won the 200 butterfly title in 2005 and the 400 medley relay title in 2004.

An elementary education major with a 3.78 grade point average, Stephens was a four-time member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll and was selected as the 2004 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s swimming.
