Gaphardt and Menchaca earn CAA baseball weekly honors

11:58 a.m., March 30, 2005--University of Delaware junior left-handed pitcher Brent Gaphardt and freshman outfielder Brandon Menchaca earned Colonial Athletic Association baseball weekly honors for their performances during last weekend’s conference-opening series against Hofstra University.

Gaphardt was named Pitcher of the Week for his no-hit effort against Hofstra in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. In an 11-0 victory, Gaphardt fanned 13 and struck out the side three times. He is ranked fourth among CAA strikeout leaders with 33. It was Gaphardt’s first weekly CAA honor.

UD hurlers Scott Rambo and Billy Harris also were named as Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 29 and March 21, respectively.

Menchaca was named Rookie of the Week for the second time in his career, batting .462 in the three-game series, including a homer, four runs scored and three RBI. He also extended his hitting streak to nine games, and had a pair of hits and scored at least one run in each of the three games. The Hens will face St Joseph’s at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 29, at Bob Hannah Stadium.
