UD women’s basketball picked fourth in CAA

Tyresa Smith
11:23 a.m., Oct. 27, 2005--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team has been picked to finish fourth in the 12-team Colonial Athletic Association in a poll of conference coaches, sports information directors and journalists, it was announced during the annual media day event held Wednesday morning at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

Old Dominion University, which has won 14 consecutive CAA championships and last year edged the Fightin’ Blue Hens in overtime for the tournament title, was picked to finish first again this season.

The Monarchs were followed in the poll’s top five by James Madison University, Drexel University, UD and Hofstra University.

Towson University was selected No. 6, and was followed by George Mason University, Georgia State University, Northeastern University, Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of North Carolina Wilmington and the College of William & Mary.

Drexel’s Catherine Scanlon was selected the preseason CAA Player of the Year.

UD, which is led by 2004-05 CAA Co-Coach of the Year Tina Martin, is coming off a stellar season in which the Hens went 25-6, won the conference regular season title, snapped Old Dominion’s 122-game CAA home winning streak and earned a berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

However, the Hens graduated two highly productive forwards in Tiara Malcom, who averaged 16.4 points per game, and Tiffany Young, who averaged 11.6 points per game.

The 2005-06 team will feature guards Tyresa Smith and Alena Koshansky. Smith was second in the conference in steals last season, with 3.2 per game. She also averaged 10.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Koshansky, a point guard, hit a team-high 41 three-point baskets.

The Hens will open the season against the University of Massachusetts of the Atlantic 10 Conference at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.
