Pastic, Hipple selected CAA Scholar-Athletes

Kelley Pastic
1:32 p.m., June 23, 2005--University of Delaware softball outfielder Kelley Pastic and men’s lacrosse attackman Andy Hipple have been named recipients of the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Award for the spring sports season.

Pastic was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 2 first team in 2005 and earned UD’s Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Medal of Merit, which is given to the senior female letter winner with the highest grade point average (3.981).

A May graduate with a bachelor’s degree in communication, Pastic served two years as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, was UD’s representative to the NCAA Leadership Conference and is a finalist for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship. She plans to pursue a master’s degree at UD beginning this fall.

Pastic was a four-year standout in the outfield for the Hens, tying a UD career record for games played with 195 and setting a career record with 51 sacrifice hits.

Andy Hipple
Hipple, a marketing and finance major and dean’s list student who graduated in May with a 3.382 grade point average, was selected as a CAA Scholar-Athlete Award winner for the second year in a row. He was a four-year standout for the Hens and completed his career with 65 goals and 21 assists in 67 games.

Hipple helped lead UD to the 2005 CAA regular season championship and a berth in the NCAA Division I national championship tournament.

One representative from each CAA sport is selected as the scholar-athlete of the year based on academics, athletics and community service. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2, be a starter or key reserve and have at least sophomore class standing. The recipients are selected by a vote of the conference’s sports information directors. Earlier this year, UD’s Leah Geib was honored in field hockey.
