Blue Hens hold top seed entering CAA tourney

8:59 a.m., March 8, 2005--The top seed belongs to the University of Delaware as it prepares for the Colonial Athletic Association women’s basketball tournament to be played March 9-12 at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, under Head Coach Tina Martin, finished the regular season 23-4 overall and 16-2 atop the CAA.

Throughout the season, the Hens got strong play from senior forwards Tiara Malcom, who averaged 16.6 points per game, and Tiffany Young, who averaged 11 points per game. Sophomore guard Tyresa Smith had 89 steals and averaged 10.3 points per game.

UD earned the top seed by wresting the conference regular season championship from perennial power Old Dominion University, which finished 19-8 overall and 15-3 in the conference after a season-ending 71-68 loss to Drexel University.

Old Dominion’s other two conference losses were at the hands of the Hens, who snapped the Monarchs’ 122-game home winning streak against CAA opponents with a 73-70 win on Jan. 9 and later edged the Monarchs 62-58 before 4,772 fans, the largest home crowd in UD women’s basketball history, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center on Feb. 11.

Despite the setbacks, Old Dominion remains a dangerous opponent, having won 13 consecutive CAA tournament championships.

First round games will be played Wednesday, March 9, with Virginia Commonwealth University meeting the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 5 p.m. and Hofstra University meeting the College of William and Mary at 7:30.

UD will take to the court during quarterfinal action on Thursday, meeting the winner of the Virginia Commonwealth-UNC Wilmington game at noon.

Fourth seed James Madison University will meet fifth seed Towson University at 2:30 p.m., and second seed Old Dominion will meet the winner of the Hofstra-William and Mary game at 5. Third seed Drexel will meet sixth seed George Mason in the day’s final game at 7:30.

The semifinals will be played on Friday, March 11, with start times of 5 and 7:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for noon, Saturday, March 12.

CAA women’s basketball tournament ticket books are $25 for all nine games with single-session tickets priced at $13 for adults, $9 for youths and seniors, and $5 general admission seating for CAA students with a valid school identification care. Tickets can be purchased by calling TicketMaster at (703) 573-SEAT.
