VCU, Old Dominion reach Colonial championship

2:33 p.m., March 7, 2005--Virginia Commonwealth University and Old Dominion University will fight for the Colonial Athletic Association championship at 7 p.m., tonight, at the Richmond Coliseum.

Virginia Commonwealth, the defending CAA champion, advanced from the quarterfinal round by defeating the University of Delaware 74-61 on Saturday. With the loss, the Fightin’ Blue Hens closed the season 11-20.

The Hens were led by junior forward Harding Nana, an All-CAA first team selection, who had 27 points and 19 rebounds. Junior Andrew Washington added 13 points for the Hens, while senior point guard Mike Slattery had nine points and five assists and became the first player in CAA history to score 1,000 points and register 600 assists in a career.

UD advanced to the quarterfinals with a convincing 76-56 victory over Towson University on Friday night. Nana had 19 points and 16 rebounds, Andrew Washington had 15 points and guard Rulon Washington had 13 points.

After defeating UD, Virginia Commonwealth defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington 55-46 in the semifinals. Old Dominion advanced to the championship game with a 72-58 victory over Hofstra University.
