UD basketball schedules for 2005-06 announced

12:43 p.m., Aug. 15, 2005--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team will compete in a tournament at North Carolina State University and will make its inaugural appearance in the ESPN Bracket Busters Tournament, and the UD women’s team will compete in a tournament at St. Joseph’s University, according to the 2005-06 schedules announced recently.

The UD men’s team, led by All-America candidate Harding Nana and celebrating the program’s 100th anniversary, will open with an exhibition game against Goldey-Beacom College on Nov. 3 at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens then will travel to North Carolina State University to compete in the Hispanic College Fund Classic from Nov. 18-20. In addition to UD and host North Carolina State, the Citadel and Stetson College will compete in the event.

UD also will take part in the second annual ESPN Bracket Busters Tournament, which includes nearly 100 mid-major teams, on Feb. 18. The Hens will play on the road but will not know their opponent until January.

The Hens’ nonconference schedule includes home games against the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Central Connecticut State University and Loyola College of Maryland and road games against Marist College, the University of Maryland Baltimore County and Rider University.

The Loyola game will be played on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, with tip-off at 1 p.m. It is the first time the Hens have played on New Year’s Eve since 1973.

UD, which posted a record of 11-20 last season under Head Coach David Henderson, will not open their home schedule until Dec. 19 when they face UNC Greensboro. That is the latest home opener since the 1944-45 season.

The 18-game Colonial Athletic Association schedule will look a little different this season with the addition of Georgia State University and Northeastern University to the 12-team conference. Not every team will play each other twice as in past years, thus the Hens will take on Georgia State, the College of William and Mary, Virginia Commonwealth University and defending league champion Old Dominion University just once.

The UD women’s team, the defending CAA regular season champion, will open the season at home, playing the University of Massachusetts of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Nov. 18 at The Bob.

The Hens, who posted a record of 25-6 last season under Head Coach Tina Martin, will compete in the St. Joseph’s Tournament Dec. 28-29 in Philadelphia. In addition to UD and the host team, the tournament includes 2005 NCAA Division I women’s championship tournament participant Bowling Green State University and Iona College.

UD’s nonconference schedule includes home games against Massachusetts, LaSalle University, the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown University and road games at American University, Fordham University and Boston University.

The UD women, who will be led this season by standout guards Tyresa Smith and Alena Koshansky, will open CAA action Dec. 4 at George Mason University and will host defending CAA tournament champion Old Dominion University on Feb. 19. Last year’s home game against Old Dominion drew a women’s basketball record 4,772 fans to The Bob.

Season tickets for both UD teams will go on sale beginning Sept. 1. The season ticket office telephone number is (302) 831-2257.
