UD baseball will honor players, Ruly Carpenter

9:53 a.m., Aug. 31, 2005--The University of Delaware baseball program will honor four former players and longtime athletics benefactor R.R.M. “Ruly” Carpenter III during its annual homecoming tailgate on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Delaware Stadium. Tailgating will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the ceremony at about 10:30 a.m.

In addition to Carpenter, those being honored include former Fightin’ Blue Hens Brad Eyman and Brian August, both members of the 200-hit club, Dave Mullin, a member of the 20-win club, and John Jancuska, who is now the head baseball coach at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Also, the UD baseball program will hold its third annual fund raising golf tournament on Friday, Oct. 7, at The Club at Patriot’s Glen in Elkton, Md. For details on either event, call Dan Hammer, UD assistant baseball coach, at (302) 831-2723.

Carpenter is one of three generations of his family who have been closely tied to UD and its intercollegiate athletics program. Elected to the UD Board of Trustees in 1990, he is chair of the Committee on Student Life and Athletics and the Nominating Committee. Carpenter also is chair of the Athletics Visiting Committee.

Eyman (1995-98) spent time both as a catcher and an outfielder with the Hens. He finished his career with 232 hits, placing him 15th all-time at UD. He had a batting average of .356, with 34 home runs, 156 runs batted in and 102 walks.

August (1995-97), currently the head baseball coach at Wilmington College, was an infielder with the Hens. He had 226 career hits and a .381 batting average, with 35 home runs, 203 runs batted in and 93 walks. He holds the career doubles mark with 71. After the 1997 college season, he was selected by the New York Yankees in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Mullin (1998-00) was a right-handed pitcher with the Hens. He threw 263.1 innings, 11th on the all-time innings pitched list, and finished with 25 wins, sixth all-time.

Jancuska (1973-75) is beginning his 29th season as the head coach at UMBC, where he has coached the Retrievers to 19 winning seasons, 18 seasons with 20 or more victories and two NCAA Division I tournament appearances. The 2000 Northeast Conference Coach of the Year has had 38 All-Region players, five All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans and 16 players who continued their careers at the professional level. As a UD outfielder, he had a career batting average of .308, with 15 doubles.
