UD’s Brian Valichka honored by conference

10:14 a.m., May 25, 2005--University of Delaware catcher Brian Valichka has been named the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year, sharing the honor with fellow catcher Pete Farina of Towson University.

UD freshman Adam Tsakonas was selected second team All-CAA and outfielders Brandon Menchaca and Dan Richardson, along with pitcher Mike McGuire, were named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.

Valichka is the first UD player in history to win conference defensive player of the year honors. He has committed just four errors, has a .991 fielding percentage and has thrown out 19 base runners attempting to steal. At the plate, Valichka is hitting .274 with 54 hits, including 16 doubles, and 30 runs scored.

Tsakonas was named second team All-CAA as a utility player. He has played at both first and third base for the Fightin’ Blue Hens and is hitting .306 with seven home runs, including one grand slam.

Menchaca is hitting .298 and leads the team with eight home runs, and Richardson is hitting .304 with six home runs, including one grand slam. McGuire is 5-4 with a 4.73 earned run average in 11 starts this season.

Towson’s Casper Wells was named the CAA Player of the Year, and Virginia Commonwealth University’s Sergio Miranda was selected the Rookie of the Year. Mark Scalf of the University of North Carolina was named the Coach of the Year.
