Blue Hen baseball team to close on the road

11:28 a.m., May 19, 2005--Following a 4-2 loss to Rider University in the final home game of the season on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium, the University of Delaware baseball team will travel to Virginia Commonwealth University for a regular season-ending three-game Colonial Athletic Association series.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens (24-28 overall, 11-10 in the CAA) are one of five teams in the conference that have locked up berths in the championship tournament to be played May 25-28 in Wilmington, N.C.

Only the host team, the University of North Carolina Wilmington, has secured its seed and will enter the tournament at No. 1. The Seahawks are 36-17 overall and 18-3 in the conference. Virginia Commonwealth is in second place, 28-18 overall and 13-8 in the conference, and is followed by George Mason University, Towson University and UD.

Hofstra University holds the edge for the sixth and final tournament berth, but must ward off both James Madison University and the College of William and Mary.

In the game against Rider, UD pitcher Matt Heppner took the loss. Right fielder Dan Richardson hit a solo home run for the Hens.
