Hen baseball clinches CAA tournament berth

12:04 p.m., May 16, 2005--By winning two out of three games at James Madison University this weekend, the University of Delaware baseball team clinched a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament to be played May 25-28 in Wilmington, N.C.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens won 7-4 on Friday and 6-5 on Saturday before falling 9-2 in the series finale on Sunday. UD is now 24-27 overall and in fifth place in the conference with a record of 11-10. The tournament field will consist of six teams.

The Hens have one CAA series remaining and will play three games at Virginia Commonwealth University beginning Thursday, May 19.

In Friday’s game, James Madison jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the third inning, but UD pitcher Brent Gaphardt came on in relief of starter Mike McGuire and held the Dukes without another run.

UD shortstop Todd Davison had four hits in five trips to the plate, including a double and a triple, and drove in three runs. Center fielder Brandon Menchaca had two hits, including a home run.

Davison continued to have a hot bat in Saturday’s game, collecting three hits and scoring two runs. Designated hitter Kelly Buber had two hits, including a home run, and drove home three runs. Pitcher Jason Rogers earned the win.

In Sunday’s loss, third baseman Adam Tsakonas had two hits and one run scored, and left fielder Bryan Hagerich drove home a pair of runs.
