Delaware baseball team captures CAA series

1:41 p.m., May 2, 2005--The University of Delaware team won two of three games in a weekend Colonial Athletic Association series against the College of William and Mary at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens won 7-1 on Friday, lost 10-6 on Saturday and then bounced back to win 12-6 on Sunday.

UD evened its overall record at 21-21. The Hens will next play a nonconference game at the University of Maryland Baltimore County at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 3.

UD will host George Mason University in an important CAA series this weekend, with games at 3 p.m., Friday, at 1 p.m., Saturday, and at 1 p.m., Sunday. The Hens are 9-5 and in third place in the conference, while George Mason is 26-15 overall and 9-9 in the conference.

In Friday’s victory over William and Mary, UD pitcher Mike McGuire worked eight innings, allowed eight hits and struck out 10 batters to earn his fifth win of the season.

Shortstop Todd Davison hit a three-run home run, and center fielder Brandon Menchaca had two hits, including a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored.

UD pitcher Brent Gaphardt took the loss in Saturday’s game. Catcher Brian Valichka hit a three-run homer run, and left fielder Bryan Hagerich also hit one out.

Scott Rambo earned the win, his sixth of the season, in Sunday’s victory. Hagerich had four hits in five trips to the plate, one a grand slam home run, and drove in five runs. Also hitting home runs were Valichka, Menchaca and first baseman Adam Tsakonas.
