Delaware baseball team sweeps Old Dominion

2:32 p.m., April 25, 2005--A weekend sweep of Old Dominion University has given the University of Delaware team a boost in the Colonial Athletic Association standings.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens jumped over the .500 mark in conference play and are now 7-5 in the CAA and 18-19 overall.

UD defeated host Old Dominion 4-2 on Friday and 5-3 and 16-4 on Sunday, closing the three-game series with an exclamation point.

In the series opener, Hens’ pitcher Mike McGuire earned the victory, allowing just one run and four hits in seven innings of work. He was relieved by Billy Harris. Catcher Brian Valichka had a pair of hits and first baseman Dan Kozek drove home a pair of runs with a double in the fourth inning.

In the second game, UD’s Brent Gaphardt got the win, with Harris again coming on in relief. Valichka and Kozek again led the offense, both ripping home runs.

Scott Rambo earned the win in the finale, with relief from Kevin Brown and Chad Kerfoot. The offense broke out in a big way, with Ryan Graham, Todd Davison, Kelly Buber and Adam Tsakonas getting three hits each. Valichka, Tsakonas and Brandon Menchaca drove in three runs each, and Davison scored four runs.

The Hens will return home for a game against Wilmington College at 3 p.m., Tuesday, at Bob Hannah Stadium.
