Valichka, Davison power Hens past Stony Brook

10:14 a.m., March 14, 2005--With catcher Brian Valichka and shortstop Todd Davison each blasting two-run home runs, the University of Delaware baseball team salvaged a weekend series by defeating Stony Brook (N.Y.) University 7-5 on Sunday at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens dropped both games of Saturday’s doubleheader, falling 5-3 and 8-0.

The victory was "just what the doctor ordered," UD Head Coach Jim Sherman said. “We had to get a win today because you just can't get swept at home."

The 6-6 Hens are scheduled to host LaSalle University at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the stadium.

In Sunday’s victory, UD broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning when Dave Harden singled, stole second, and scored when Brock Donovan singled. Donovan also scored later in the inning when freshman Dan Richardson singled. Richardson had three hits, including two doubles, a run batted in and a stolen base in his first start for the Hens.

UD pitcher Chad Kerfoot earned the win in relief. Mike McGuire and Brent Gaphardt took the losses on Saturday. Dan Kozek homered and Valichka had two hits in the first game, and the Hens were held to just three hits in the second game.
