Blue Hen baseball team completes UMass sweep

Brandon Menchaca
2:15 p.m., March 7, 2005--The University of Delaware baseball team got strong pitching and had the hot bats in a three-game sweep of the University of Massachusetts in a series played this weekend at the Delaware Technical and Community College campus in Georgetown.

With the sweep, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 5-4 on the season and have a four-game winning streak.

On Sunday, the Hens won 13-1 with senior pitcher Scott Rambo picking up his second victory of the season. UD center fielder Brandon Menchaca led off the first inning with a home run for the second straight game, and left fielder Bryan Hagerich and first baseman Dan Kozek also hit home runs. Hagerich had three hits in four at-bats, scored three runs and drove home three runs.

On Saturday, UD took a doubleheader, winning 3-2 in the first game and 13-3 in the second. Second baseman Brock Donovan had three hits in the first game, and right fielder Dave Harden hit an RBI single to win the game in the 10th inning. UD reliever Mitch Heckert got the win after a strong start by Mike McGuire, who allowed just three hits in seven innings.

In the second game, Menchaca led off with a home run and tripled later in the first inning as the Hens batted around and scored nine runs. Shortstop Todd Davison had three hits, two of them doubles, Kozek had two doubles and five runs batted in and catcher Kelly Buber belted his second home run of the season. Jason Rogers earned the win for the Hens.

Weather permitting, UD will play at Rider University on Wednesday. The Hens are scheduled to return home to Bob Hannah Stadium for a game against George Washington University at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, and a three-game weekend series against Stony Brook University with a doubleheader starting at noon, Saturday, and a single game at noon, Sunday.
