Delaware’s Kelley Pastic wins NCAA scholarship

Kelley Pastic
11:52 a.m., Sept. 29, 2005--University of Delaware softball standout Kelley Pastic has been awarded a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, becoming the second UD scholar-athlete to earn the prestigious award for the 2004-05 season.

Earlier, field hockey All-American Leah Geib, who is a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award, was named a recipient of a postgraduate scholarship.

Pastic graduated from UD in May with a bachelor’s degree in communication with a concentration in mass communication and with minors in Spanish and coaching science. She is attending graduate school at UD, where she is working toward a master’s degree in communication.

Pastic was named a Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 2 team. She earned UD's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Medal of Merit, which is given to the senior female letter winner with the highest grade point average (3.981).

A two-year president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Pastic was UD's representative to the NCAA Leadership Conference in 2004.

She was a four-year standout in the outfield for the Fightin’ Blue Hens and started all 53 games in 2005. She tied the school record for games played in a career, with 195, and is UD's all-time leader in sacrifices, with 51.

She plans to assist UD Head Coach B.J. Ferguson and her staff during the 2006 season.

Pastic is the ninth UD scholar-athlete to earn the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Previous winners from UD were Brian Downie (basketball) in 1979, John Wehner (track and field) in 1983, Carol Renfrew (tennis) in 1984, Chuck Herak (tennis) in 1985, Brian Farrell (football) in 1985, Alison Farrance (track and field) in 1986, Travis Adams (track and field) in 1995 and Geib (field hockey) in 2005.
