Lewing named women’s soccer assistant coach

3:57 p.m., July 7, 2004--Ginna Lewing, former UD standout defender, has joined the Blue Hen women’s soccer team as an assistant coach.

A native of Yardley Pa., Lewing is a graduate of Pennsbury High School, where the four-year letter winner led the soccer team to the 1999 state title and to a state runner-up spot in 2000. Lewing also was a standout in swimming and field hockey.

Lewing joins a staff that includes Scott Grzenda, who will begin his 15th year this fall as head coach, and assistant coaches Tina Steck and Ken Cohen.

A four-year standout on defense for Delaware, Lewing also was a two-year team co-captain who never missed a game and started in all 77 games during her career. During that time, the Blue Hens compiled a record of 41-30-6 and never suffered a losing season.

A sports management major who graduated in May, Lewing led the 2003 Blue Hen squad to a third-place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and a 10-6-3 overall record.

Lewing earned honorable mention All-America East honors as a freshman when she scored two goals and dished out four assists during the 2000 season. A member of the America East All-Tournament team in 2001, Lewing recorded two goals and three assists.

First-team honors came as a junior during the 2002 season, when she registered two goals and an assist, and she added a pair of goals during the 2003 season and was named to the All-CAA first team as well as UD Alumni Association Most Valuable Player.

During her career at UD, Lewing scored eight goals and eight assists and had 53 shots on goal.

The Blue Hens, who are expected to return seven starters and 16 letter winners, will open the 2004 season on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at home against St. Joseph’s.
