UD volleyball team to host tournament

10:16 a.m., Sept. 7, 2004--The University of Delaware volleyball team will host the Delaware Invitational Tournament this weekend, with action scheduled Friday and Saturday at the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens will face the University of Albany at 2 p.m. and the University of New Mexico at 7 p.m., Friday. UD will play George Washington University at 2 p.m., Saturday.

UD finished last weekend’s California State University-Fullerton Tournament with one win and two losses.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated Iona University 3-1 and fell to Cal State-Fullerton 3-1 and to Texas State University 3-2.

Against Iona, Valerie Murphy had 27 kills. Claire McCormack had 16 kills and Sarah Engle 12 kills, while Allison Lutz had 55 assists and Taylor Govaars had 23 digs.

Against Cal State-Fullerton, Engle had 20 kills and Murphy had 13. Lutz had 43 assists and Govaars 29 digs.

Against Texas State, Murphy had 19 kills and Engle had 15. Lutz had 60 assists and Govaars had 20 digs, becoming just the ninth player in Hen history to reach the 1,000 mark.
