Ex-Hen Slowik leads Green Bay Packers defense

2:40 p.m., July 26, 2004--When the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League report to training camps at St. Norbert College, in DePere, Wis., on Saturday, July 31, they will be welcomed by a new defensive coordinator in Bob Slowik, a former University of Delaware football player.

Slowik, who is in his 13th season as an NFL coach, was promoted to his present position in January by Head Coach Mike Sherman. He takes over the defense after spending the past two years as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach.

"I have a lot of confidence in Bob Slowik and his abilities,” Sherman, who also is the Green Bay general manager, said. “I've watched him over the last four years and he's done a tremendous job in helping us grow as a football team and as a defense."

Slowik joined the Packers after serving as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns in 1999.

Familiar with the NFC's North Division, Slowik previously was defensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears for six years (1993-98) before moving to the Browns. Under Slowik's direction, the Bears finished in the top half of the NFL in total defense in five of his six seasons. In addition to duties as defensive coordinator, Slowik coached the secondary during his first three years in Chicago and headed up the linebackers his final three seasons.

Slowik joined the Bears after spending the 1992 season with the Dallas Cowboys as a defensive assistant, a campaign that saw the Cowboys finish 16-3 and win Super Bowl XXVII.

The 50-year-old Slowik began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at UD in 1977. After two seasons at Delaware, he became a part-time defensive assistant at Florida (1979-82), where his wife, Carol Thomson Slowik, was the Gators' head women's track coach.

As a collegian, Slowik was a two-year starting cornerback at Delaware, helping the Fightin' Blue Hens record a 16-6 mark his final two seasons, highlighted by a trip to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs following his senior campaign in 1976.
