Women’s basketball extends winning streak

8:46 a.m., Feb. 12, 2005--Fueled by a record-setting crowd, the University of Delaware women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to 17 games with a 62-58 victory over Colonial Athletic Association powerhouse Old Dominion University on Friday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The game drew 4,772 fans, the most to see a women’s basketball game in UD history, and Head Coach Tina Martin and the Fightin’ Blue Hens hope many will continue to come out to support the team through the end of the season. Fans will have their next chance to cheer on the Hens at 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 13, when UD takes on Virginia Commonwealth University at The Bob.

With Friday’s victory, the Hens improved to 19-2 overall and 12-0 in the conference while Old Dominion fell to 13-7 overall and 9-2 in the CAA, with both losses to UD.

The Hens jumped in front early in the game, riding an 8-0 run to take a 10-4 lead with 13:44 remaining in the first half. They extended the margin to 25-14 with 4:32 remaining on a jumper by senior forward Tiara Malcom, which finished with a team-high 18 points. Old Dominion got within nine twice late in the period, but senior forward Tiffany Young scored with 27 seconds on the clock to send UD into halftime with a 33-22 lead.

Old Dominion closed to within eight at 33-25 early in the second half, but the Hens went on a 10-2 run and took their largest lead of the game at 43-27 with 12:08 left when sophomore guard Tyresa Smith hit a lay-up.

UD still led 47-33 with 9:06 to play, but Old Dominion’s T.J. Jordan, who finished with a career-high 28 points, nailed consecutive three-pointers to cut the lead to 47-39 with 8:28 left to play.

Jordan again hit back-to-back three-pointers to bring Old Dominion within 49-48 with 5:36 remaining when two Malcom free throws and a baseline jumper by senior Julie Sailer put the Hens up by five at 55-50 with 2:49 to play.

The Monarchs drew within two at 57-55 with 25 seconds left to play but free throws by Liz Hayes and Alena Koshansky extended UD’s lead to 61-55 with 11 seconds to go. Old Dominion’s Jordan hit her seventh three-pointer of the night but another free throw by Koshansky with three seconds to play sealed the win for the Hens.
