UD women’s basketball tops Fairfield 76-54

9:05 a.m., Dec. 10, 2004--The University of Delaware women’s basketball team jumped out to an early lead and was never challenged in a 76-54 victory over Fairfield University on Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

With the victory, the Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 4-2. UD will return to action Dec. 19 when the Hens visit LaSalle University in Philadelphia, then will head to Lehigh University for the Christmas Classic Tournament Dec. 29-30.

UD will open Colonial Athletic Association action Jan. 2 at Virginia Commonwealth University.

In Thursday’s victory, UD senior forward Tiara Malcom led four scorers in double figures with 14 points. She also had a team-high seven rebounds. Guard Tyresa Smith had 12 points, four assists and six steals, Tiffany Young had 12 points and five rebounds, and sophomore guard Karleena Tobin had a career-high 11 points off the bench.

UD, which took a 41-28 lead into halftime, shot well from both the field and the foul line in registering the 22-point victory. The Hens hit on 23 of 48 shots from the field and 28 of 34 shots from the foul line.
