UD women's basketball wins tourney title

2:41 p.m., Dec. 31, 2004--The University of Delaware women's basketball team defeated host Lehigh University 65-51 on Thursday to win the Christmas City Classic tournament title held in Bethlehem, Pa.

The Fightin' Blue Hens reached the championship game by defeating the University of Alabama of the powerful Southeastern Conference.

Against Lehigh, UD got balanced scoring. Senior Tiara Malcom had 14 points, Tiffany Young had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Tyresa Smith had 11 points.

The Hens led nearly the entire game, going up 33-23 at halftime and leading by double digits throughout much of the second half.

UD, which improved to 7-2, will open Colonial Athletic Association play with a game at Virginia Commonwealth University at 2 p.m., Sunday.
