Stephens, Law lead UD women’s swim team

10:54 a.m., Jan. 10, 2005--University of Delaware senior swimmer Sara Stephens won three events, and the Fightin’ Blue Hens won the 800 freestyle relay in the final competition of the day to post a 123-120 Colonial Athletic Association victory over James Madison University on Sunday afternoon at Rawstrom Pool in the Carpenter Sports Building.

In the men's meet, four different UD swimmers won two events each, but the Hens fell 130.6-106.5 to James Madison.

The UD women’s team improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the CAA, while the men’s team fell to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

Stephens won the 200 individual medley (2:10.60), the 200 butterfly (2:10.46) and the 200 breaststroke (2:24.91) to lead the Hens.

UD clinched the meet when the 800 freestyle relay team of Meredith Law, Sara Reed, Kendall Warren and Ellen Heinz won easily in a time of 7:58.56. Law also captured the 500 freestyle (5:15.15) and 1,000 freestyle (10:41.80) and Reed won the 200 backstroke (2:10.55), while Heinz finished second in the 100 freestyle (54.40) and 200 freestyle (1:56.23).

UD’s Sarah Bergan won the three-meter diving event with a score of 211.28.

For the UD men, Brendan Spencer won both the 200 individual medley (2:01.44) and 200 butterfly (2:00.76). Adam Blomberg won the 500 freestyle (4:50.89), swam a leg of the winning 800 freestyle relay and was second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:16.87).

Levan Beridze won the 100 freestyle (48.17) and Joe Virion won the 200 freestyle (1:48.53) and placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:53.22). Both swam legs on the winning 800 freestyle relay.

On Saturday, both UD teams were defeated by Towson University in CAA action. Towson won the women’s meet 140-101 and the men’s 145-84.

Law won the 500 freestyle and the 1,000, Stephens won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.36, and Bergen won the three-meter dive.

For the men’s team, Beridze won the 100 freestyle in 48.49 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Adam Blomberg, Andrew Zinn, Brendan Spencer and Beridze captured its event in 1:28.97.

UD will take two weeks off and then will return to action Saturday, Jan. 22, against Loyola College of Maryland at Rawstrom Pool.
