UD’s Cross, Mooney are Academic All-Stars

4:58 p.m., Dec. 23, 2004--Two University of Delaware football players, senior defensive linemen Ben Cross and Chris Mooney, have been named to the seventh annual NCAA Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star team.

UD was one of just four universities to place more than one scholar-athlete on the team, joining Liberty, New Hampshire and Wofford.

Cross and Mooney were among six Atlantic 10 Conference players honored. Also cited were quarterback Lang Campbell of the College of William and Mary, offensive lineman Tim Carignan and wide receiver Shaun Diner of the University of New Hampshire and linebacker Arthur Townsend of 2004 national champion James Madison University.

Cross is a two-time College Sports Information Directors of
America Academic All-American and was named to the first team for 2004. A civil engineering major with a 3.95 grade point average, he was the Atlantic 10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for football in 2003.

Mooney is a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Academic selection. He was a third team Sports Network All-American and a second team CoSIDA Academic All-American this season. He is an accounting major with a 3.51 grade point average.

Six finalists have been selected to receive two $5,000 postgraduate scholarships, and the winners will be announced during the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention scheduled June 15-18 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The finalists are Stephen Bono of Lafayette, Justin Gibson of Bucknell, Kevin Knutson of Valparaiso, Jonathan LeDonne of Robert Morris, Brandon Mason of Elon and Craig Unger of Morehead State.
