UDFSC competitors win silver medals

10:41 a.m., Jan. 13, 2005--As fans prepare for the opening of the senior men’s and ladies singles competitions this evening, two members of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club have already won silver medals in the 2005 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships being held in Portland, Ore.

Christine Zukowski of the University of Delaware Figure Skating Club finished second in the junior ladies competition, and Adam Rippon finished second in the novice men’s singles competition.

Zukowski was in third place after the short program and moved up a spot to overtake Megan Oster for the silver medal in Wednesday’s free skate. Zukowski was the national novice champion in 2004. Also, Anna Peng of the UD Figure Skating Club finished fifth in the junior ladies competition.

The senior ladies singles championships will begin tonight, with Kimmie Meissner, Katherine Hadford and Megan Williams-Stewart representing the UD Figure Skating Club. Meissner is a U.S. junior champion and world junior silver medalist. The ladies will skate their short program on Thursday with their free skate on Saturday.

The senior men’s championships will begin Thursday, as well, with Shaun Rogers representing the UD Figure Skating Club. Among the favorites is a former UD skater, Johnny Weir. The men will skate their short program on Thursday with their free skate on Saturday.

In the senior dance competition, UD Figure Skating Club’s Kendra Goodwin and Brent Bommentre are in fifth place, and Philipp Rey and Julia Rey are in seventh place after the original and compulsory dances. The couples will compete in the free dance on Friday.

In senior pairs, Jennifer Don and Jonathan Hunt are in fifth place, and former Olympians Tiffany Scott and Philip Dulebohn are in sixth place after the short program on Wednesday. The pairs free skate will be on Friday.

Televised coverage of the national championships begins Thursday evening, Jan. 13. ESPN2 will air the pairs short program and the original dance program from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Friday, Jan. 14, ESPN2 will air coverage of the short programs for the men and the ladies from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

ABC will provide weekend coverage, with the free dance and men’s free skate from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, and the pairs free skate and ladies free skate from 8-11 p.m. that night.

ABC also will air the exhibition program that follows the competition from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23.
