UD men’s basketball downs Rider 68-66

11:04 a.m., Dec. 13, 2004--Wearing 1950s style uniforms on throwback night, the University of Delaware men’s basketball team threw off a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Rider University 68-66 on Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens, who improved to 4-3, were led by junior forward Harding Nana, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds, and guards Rulon Washington, who had 19 points, and Andrew Washington, who had 17.

Senior point guard Mike Slattery, playing with an injury suffered in the first half, had nine assists and six rebounds.

Rider stormed out to an early 7-0 lead and carried a 40-30 advantage into intermission.

A quick second half start got the Hens back in the game as Rulon Washington hit two three-pointers in the first five minutes of play, the second of which tied the score at 43-43.

The game went back and forth, with the teams tied 66-66 with just 1:36 remaining. The Hens took the lead for good with a lay-up by Nana with 1:13 left to play.

Rider had several late chances to tie or win the game, with UD’s Calvin Smith swatting away a shot by Terrance Mouton with seven seconds left and Jerry Johnson’s three-point attempt falling short as the buzzer sounded.

The Hens now take a short break before competing in the San Juan (Puerto Rico) Shootout tournament Dec. 20-22. Other teams competing in the tournament will be Auburn University, out of the powerful Southeastern Conference, the University of Toledo and Middle Tennessee State University.
