UD men’s basketball defeats William & Mary

Harding Nana
11:01 a.m., Jan. 10, 2005--Snapping a six-game losing streak, the University of Delaware men’s basketball team defeated the College of William and Mary 69-59 in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens overcame a 13-point deficit with a second half charge to defeat the Tribe.

UD forward Harding Nana had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and guard Andrew Washington had 24 points to lead the Hens, who improved to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in the CAA.

"This is a good feeling," UD Head Coach David Henderson said. "We haven't felt like this in a long time. You have to give William and Mary a lot of credit because they are a very good basketball team. We were fortunate today that we made the plays when we needed to. We challenged the team from the heart and they responded. It was a great team effort. Mike Slattery did a great job of running the offense, you can't say enough about Harding Nana and Andrew broke out of a slump in a big way today."

UD trailed 30-23 at the half and William and Mary extended its lead to 13 points at 38-25 with 16:02 left to play.

But, the Hens responded with a 20-5 run over the next eight minutes, holding William and Mary without a field goal over the span and eventually taking a 45-43 lead with 8:28 remaining. Nana was a major force during the run, at one point scoring nine straight points for the Hens.

Over the next six minutes, the lead changed hands four times and there were three ties before William and Mary took a 57-56 edge with 2:40 left to play.

UD’s Rulon Washington, who had just hit a three-point basket to keep the Hens alive, came back with another three-pointer to give the Hens the lead for good at 59-57 with 2:28 left. UD finished the game on a 13-2 run, holding the Tribe without a field goal over the last four minutes.

UD will return for a three-game homestand, first facing George Mason University at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. The Hens will then play James Madison University at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 15, and Virginia Commonwealth University at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19.
