Haney named to Academic All-American team

Matt Haney
9:12 a.m., Dec. 10, 2004--Matt Haney of the University of Delaware men’s soccer team has been named a third-team College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American.

Haney, a sophomore defender, is the first UD men's soccer player to earn the national award, which is determined by a vote of sports information directors throughout the country.

Haney was one of 33 players selected to the three All-Academic teams. To be eligible for the team, scholar-athletes must be at least a sophomore, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and be a starter or key reserve.

Haney has started 37 of 38 games as a defender for the Fightin’ Blue Hens and has four goals and one assist. He is majoring in biological sciences and has a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Haney was the only sophomore named to the Academic All-America teams and was one of only three scholar-athletes to have a perfect grade point average, joining second team selection Matt Wiley of the University of Tulsa and third team pick Patrick Colas of Radford University.
