Riley runs to championship in Delaware Invitational meet

3:31 p.m., Sept. 22, 2003--University of Delaware senior Patrick Riley won his second straight individual title to lead the men’s team to a second-place finish in the Delaware Cross Country Invitational meet held Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens women’s team placed fifth in the team standings, with Erin Gemmill the top UD finisher in 12th place.

The University of Pennsylvania swept the men's and women's Division I team titles as the Quaker men placed six runners in the top 10 to post 20 points and outdistance runner-up Delaware.

In the women's race, Penn put five runners in the top 10 to earn 26 points to outdistance St. Joseph's.

The Penn men earned 20 points followed by Delaware (39), Hofstra (97), Loyola (109), Towson (134), Delaware State (169) and Morgan State (209).

In the women's race, Penn won with 26 points followed by St. Joseph's (56), Loyola (69), Hofstra (112), Delaware (133), Towson (138), Morgan State (229), Delaware State (254) and Coppin State (271).

Riley, who won last week's Towson Invitational, earned his second straight individual title and seventh of his career as he covered the 8,000 meter course in 25:51.27, more than 20 seconds faster than runner-up Steve Hayes of Pennsylvania, who ran to a time of 26:11.03.

Also for Delaware, sophomore Kevin DuPrey placed seventh in 27:07.15, freshman P.J. Meany was eighth in 27:12.72, sophomore Dan Frey was 11th (27:26.40), senior John Morgan was 12th in 27:30.11 and Mike Sadowsky was 14th in 27:32.64.

For the UD women, Gemmill paced the Hens for the 10th straight race since last season, finishing 12th overall with a time of 19:41.42 in the 5,000-meter race. Loyola's Andrea Rovegno won in a time of 18:57.29, downing Penn's Emily Logan by just over seven seconds.

Also for the UD women, junior Kate Klim was 28th (20:24.11), sophomore Sari Weissbard was 30th (20:32.25), freshman Meghan Weaver was 32nd (20:40.67) and senior Mary Martini was 44th (21:15.76).
