Delaware swim teams race past Georgetown

10:30 a.m. Nov. 3, 2003--The University of Delaware swimming and diving teams swept Georgetown University in nonconference meets held Saturday at the Harry Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens women won nine events to defeat Georgetown 143-98 and give UD Head Coach John Hayman his 100th career victory at Delaware. He is 110-59 in his 15th season as head coach of the Hens.

The UD men won their first meet of the season, 143-96, behind three wins from Alex Skacel.

The UD women dominated the action as Sara Stephens captured the 200 butterfly (2:11.01) and 200 individual medley (2:12.94), Jill Fitzgerald the 50 freestyle (24.83) and 100 freestyle (54.02) and Kim Fields the 1,000 freestyle (10:37.26).

Also, Louisiana State University transfer Lauren Ostroski won the 200 breaststroke (2:25.52) in her Delaware debut, and Sara Reed won the 200 freestyle (1:59.00).

The 400 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli, Ostroski, Stephens and Erica Pearson was also a winner in a time of 4:06.08.

On the men's side, Skacel had a hand in three victories as he won the 200 backstroke (2:02.38) and 200 individual medley (2:02.22), and teamed to win the 400 medley relay (3:46.00) with Cory Sanderson, David Hardy and Brendan Spencer.

UD freshman Steve Henn won the one-meter diving event (248.10 points) and was second in the three-meter, and Kevin Kotowski won the 100 freestyle (49.63) and teamed with Jeff Shields, Colin Gibson and Matt DuShuttle to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:20.91).

Shields won the 200 freestyle (1:50.24), and Sanderson, making his collegiate debut, won the 1,000 freestyle (10:21.83).

Both UD teams will return to Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday, Nov. 8, for a dual meet at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
