Hofstra defeats Delaware, claims CAA softball title

9:32 a.m., May 17, 2004--The University of Delaware softball team lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in extra innings Saturday afternoon as host Hofstra University won its third straight Colonial Athletic Association championship.

Head Coach B.J. Ferguson and the Fightin’ Blue Hens entered play Saturday without a loss in the double elimination tournament. Their remarkable run included a 3-2 victory over Hofstra.

Hofstra, which has won seven consecutive conference titles dating back to the America East, won the first game Saturday 2-0, which forced the late afternoon final.

In the final, UD pitcher Jenn Joseph went four scoreless innings. She scattered five hits and struck out three Hofstra batters.

Freshman Carolynn Sloat, who worked the first game, came on in relief in the fifth and Hofstra broke through for a run to make it 1-0.

The Hens rallied to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Laurie Erickson, who had four hits in the deciding game, looped a single down the left field line to score Laura Streets, who had singled earlier in the inning.

The game remained tied until the top of the ninth inning when Hofstra’s Lisa Wambold hit a home run for the victory.

In Saturday’s action, Sloat set the UD record for strikeouts in a season with 187. She eclipsed the mark of 177 set by Kristi O’Connell.

Streets, the CAA Player of the Year who flirted with a .400 batting average throughout the season, finished at .395.
