UD men’s tennis team advances in CAA play

John Tully
2:42 p.m., April 22, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s tennis team defeated Drexel University 4-0 in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament on Thursday morning at the College of William and Mary’s Adair Tennis Courts in Williamsburg, Va.

UD advances to the quarterfinal round of the tournament with a match at 11:30 a.m., Friday, April 23, against No. 2 seed William and Mary.

The UD women’s team, seeded No. 6 in the tournament, will take on No. 3 Old Dominion University at 9 a.m., Friday, April 23, at the Busch Tennis Complex.

The Fightin’ Blue Hen men’s team opened the competition against Drexel by sweeping the doubles and singles matches.

UD claimed the double point with a pair of wins, as the No. 1 team of Sanjay Khindri and John Tully defeated Drexel’s Pasquale Cardone and Keith Juaniza 8-1 and the No. 2 team of Josh Ditman and Ari Zweig defeated Ilija Tunjic and Nevzat Cubukcu 8-4.

In singles, Khindri defeated Reda Akbil 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Tully defeated Walid El Jebbari at No. 2 when the Drexel player retired in the second set, and Ditman defeated Juaniza 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 spot.

By CAA tournament rules, the other three matches in progress were suspended because the overall contest was already decided.

Tully improved to 18-8 this season in singles play and won his 41st career match. The UD record for victories in a single season is 21 and was set by Jon Zolin in 1973-74.
