Freshmen find net in UD men’s soccer victory

10:40 a.m., Sept. 11, 2003--University of Delaware freshmen George Severini and John Leonard scored their first collegiate goals to lead the Fightin’ Blue Hens men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Rider University on Wednesday night at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.

Severini scored in the eighth minute of play, tapping in his own rebound, and Leonard found the net in the 85th minute to put the game away. Leonard, who scored just 11 second after entering the match, was assisted by another freshman, Matt Haney.

UD goalkeeper Kyle Haynes made three saves to post his second consecutive shutout and the ninth of his career.

Delaware raised its record to 2-1-1, while Rider fell to 0-5.

The Hens will return to action when they travel to Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Md., for a match at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13. Mount St. Mary’s is 2-2 and defeated Rider 3-2 to open the season.
