Delaware men’s lacrosse falls to No. 12 Towson

9:07 a.m., April 15, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team made a battle of it but ultimately lost 11-9 to No. 12 ranked Towson University in a Colonial Athletic Association contest played Wednesday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson.

With the loss, the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the CAA.

UD will return to conference action with a game against Drexel University at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 17, at Rullo Stadium.

In the loss to Towson, eight different UD players had points. Matt Alrich, Jordan Hall and Andy Hipple had two goals each and freshman Cam Howard had one goal and three assists.

Hen midfielder Ryan Metzbower also scored and increased his career point total, which includes goals and assists, to 99. He is just one point from becoming the 25th player in UD history to reach 100.

UD goalkeeper Chris Collins had 10 saves.

Towson jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead but the Hens rallied with goals by Alrich and Metzbower to tie the game 3-3 with six minutes left before halftime.

Towson scored two additional first half goals to take a 6-4 lead into the break.

UD got to within one goal twice in the third quarter but Towson went on a run to increase its lead to 10-6 early in the fourth quarter. Then Hall and Hipple scored, and Alrich found the net with 1:34 remaining to pull the Hens to within one goal at 10-9.

Towson secured the win when Ben DeFelice, the CAA’s leading face-off specialist, won the draw and scored with 20 seconds left on a man-up situation.
