UD men’s basketball will host JMU Jan. 12

UD’s Mike Slattery scored 20 points in the loss to Towson.
11:53 a.m., Jan. 12, 2004--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team will attempt to end a two-game Colonial Athletic Association losing streak when the Fightin’ Blue Hens host James Madison University at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

After opening the CAA season with a home victory over Hofstra University, UD has dropped consecutive road games to Virginia Commonwealth and Towson to fall to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in conference.

James Madison is 3-8 overall and 0-3 in CAA.

The Hens lost to Towson 70-68 on Saturday evening at the Towson Center. UD battled back from a 12-point deficit to take a narrow lead late in the game, but then Towson guard Jamaal Gilchrist went to work, scoring five points in 39 seconds, including the game-winner on a lay-up with 4.4 seconds left to play.

With the win, Towson snapped a 16-game CAA losing streak.

Four Towson starters scored in double figures. Lawrence Hamm led the way with a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds, Gilchrist finished with 15 points and six assists, and Mike Green and Andrius Petkunas each finished with 12 points.

UD guard Mike Slattery scored 16 of his season-high 20 points in the second half, converting nine of 13 shooting from the field for the game, to lead the Hens.

Harding Nana added 13 points and seven assists in his first career start, and Raphael Madera chipped in with 10 points and five boards for Delaware. The Hens shot 50 percent from the field (28 of 56) and held a 31-30 rebounding advantage but were hurt by 22 turnovers, including 17 in the first half.

The turnovers helped Towson take a 31-27 lead into halftime, but UD fought back to tie the score early in the second half at 31-31 on short jumpers by Nana and Madera in the first two minutes of action.

Towson, which shot 67 percent from the field in the second half (16 of 24), scored 14 of the next 18 points over a span of four minutes to take a double-digit lead at 45-35 with 13:20 left to play.

UD cut into the lead late in the game as Mike Ames scored seven points in one minute, hitting a jumper with 1:53 left to cut the lead to 63-60, nailing two free throws with 1:03 left and putting the Hens up by one at 66-65 with his only three-pointer of the game with 53 seconds to play.

Gilchrist then went to work, completing a conventional three-point play on a driving lay-up to put the Tigers back up 68-66 with 39 seconds left. The Hens tied it at 68-68 10 seconds later on a shot in the lane by Nana, but Gilchrist came back again, driving down the lane and laying the ball in with just 4.4 seconds left for what proved to be the game-winner.

The Hens had one last chance, but Chris Prothro's three-point attempt from the right wing under heavy pressure bounced off the side of the rim to end the game.
