Atlantic 10 recognizes Delaware back Bennett

10:06 a.m., Sept. 15, 2003--University of Delaware senior running back Germaine Bennett, who led the Figntin’ Blue Hens to a 44-14 win over the University of Richmond Saturday evening, has been named the Atlantic 10 Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week.Bennett reached career-highs with 26 carries for 122 yards and three touchdowns as UD opened Atlantic 10 play with an easy victory. The game was Bennett’s first career start for the Blue Hens.

Bennett also rushed for 109 yards and one touchdown in Delaware’s season-opening 41-7 win over The Citadel Sept. 6. He is the first UD running back to rush for more than 100 yards in consecutive games since Pat Williams accomplished the feat in 1995.

Bennett’s three touchdowns were the most by a UD player since Butter Pressey scored three touchdowns against the University of Rhode Island in 1999.

He is also the first Delaware player to earn Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week honors since quarterback Matt Nagy was honored in November 2000.

Also earning notice by the Atlantic 10 were Northeastern University linebacker Rold Louis, who was named Defensive Player of the Week; University of Maine freshman cornerback Manauris Arias, who was named Rookie of the Week; and Villanova University kick returner Moe Gibson, who was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
