Rider tops UD nine

12:15 p.m., April 11, 2003--Carl Loadenthal hit a walk-off grand slam home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Rider University a 9-8 win over the University of Delaware in a game Thursday, April 10, at Daly Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

The Blue Hens have now dropped five straight and fall to 9-19 on the season while the Broncs improve to 9-12.

With the game tied 5-5 heading into the top half of the 11th inning, UD freshman third baseman Brent Rogers singled in two runs to cap a three-run inning that staked the Hens to an 8-5 lead. It did not hold as Loadenthal blasted his game-winning shot.

Sophomore second baseman Brock Donovan put the Hens up 2-1 in the second as he drove in two with a single to right center field.

Rogers led off the eighth inning with a solo homer, his first at Delaware, to give the Hens a 5-4 advantage but the Broncs tied the game 5-5 in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI ground out by Steve Sciaraffo.

Delaware senior catcher Matt Wimer smacked a one-out double to right center in the 10th inning but Eric Weiner, the last of seven Rider pitchers, got the next two batters to ground out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 11th, UD sophomore righty Chris Garrick (0-2) struck out Sciaraffo to lead off the inning. From there he allowed three straight singles to load the bases, then gave up the slam to Loadenthal.

Todd Davison, Kris Dufner, Steve Van Note, Steve Harden and Rogers each had two hits.

Junior righty Mark Michael started for the Hens and went 7.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. He struck out three Rider batters.

Weather permitting, UD is scheduled to begin a three-game weekend series at 3 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Colonial Athletic Association rival Towson University.
