Study abroad sashes to decorate graduation gowns

Special student study abroad sashes will be worn for the first time this spring during Commencement. Modeling the new decorative accessory are (from left) junior Louie Andrejewski and seniors Lon Haines, Susan Sanford, Heather Spencer, John Bezera and Carrie Happoldt.

Colorful sashes will decorate more than 250 students’ gowns during this spring’s Commencement in order to draw attention to the University of Delaware’s extremely popular study abroad program.
The satin sashes, which drape around the neck, are handmade and will feature the colors of the specific country’s flag where the UD student studied.

William McNabb, director of overseas studies in the Center for International Studies, said he came up with the idea after seeing similar sashes displayed last year at a study abroad conference.

“I thought there wasn’t any better way to heighten awareness about the opportunities for Delaware students to study in pretty much any part of the world, than by wearing these sashes at graduation,” McNabb said.

“The sashes are very bright and, therefore, they will be quite visible,” he said. “Members of the graduating class, their families and alumni will inquire about the sashes, prompting conversation about the study abroad program at Delaware. Word will spread quickly about the program and the country in which the student studied.”

The sashes, which are $30, can be seen and purchased at the University Bookstore. The most popular sashes include those from Great Britain, Spain, Costa Rica, Italy and France.
