May 25, 2002--At the University of Delawares 153rd Commencement May 25, the senior class donated more than $14,500 to create a memorial at the University in memory of the lives lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11.
Corinne Bria, president of the Delaware Undergraduate Student Congress, said, Our University, our country and the world saw the transforming effects that occurred in the days, weeks and months following Sept. 11. The candlelight vigil, the interfaith prayer service, the Ribbon Garden, the forum and the Night to Unite events all showed that University students, faculty and community members were not going to hide in fear but rather chose to mobilize and respond. We were overwhelmed with emotion, yet we joined hands and helped one another rise from the rubble, for we were bruised, but not broken.
Bria said the funds were donated to create a memorial on UDs South Mall, the location of the Ribbon Garden created in the days following the tragedies.
This memorial will forever honor the lives of University alumni and friends lost on the day and will serve the University as a means of remembering the precious nature of life and the courage of the human spirit, Bria said.
The fund-raising effort was organized by a committee of seniors, co-chaired by Rebecca Ettinger of Bolton, Mass., and John Heiss of Honeoye Falls, N.Y., who presented the gift to UD President David P. Roselle.
Confirmed among the dead in the Sept. 11 tragedies are five alumni and family members of 11 students and 11 alumni and friends.
