Summer environmental research internships open for undergraduates

Paid, hands-on internships offer community engaged research across the Mid-Atlantic

The Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) is currently accepting applications for several paid summer internships. Students will work alongside faculty in research and professional development settings, gaining critical skills in lab and field work, data analysis, scientific communications and community outreach.

Community Engagement and Ecological Restoration interns will help restore human and ecological communities alongside community leaders in Delaware and Maryland. Intern projects involve urban reforestation, land restoration, food justice farming, and environmental education. Those interested should email a resume and cover letter to Dr. McKay Jenkins (mckay@udel.edu). Applications close February 28, 2026.

The Risks, Impacts and Strategies for Coastal Communities (RISCC) project helps develop long-term resilience plans for coastal communities disproportionately affected by climate hazards such as flooding, storms, and salinization. Three undergraduate internships are available: two full-time roles in civil & coastal engineering and economic education & outreach, and a part-time role in qualitative data management & analysis. Applications close March 8, 2026.

The Water in the Complex Coastal Environment of Delaware project (Project WiCCED) studies environmental and human dynamics caused by the movement of saltwater into freshwater systems. Four undergraduate research internships are available for undergrad students, exploring saltwater intrusion as it relates to plant and soil science, chemistry, geography, and data analysis. Applications close March 16, 2026.

All UD undergraduate students interested in climate, policy, environmental monitoring, GIS, and sustainable adaptation are encouraged to apply.
