Lecture highlights Internet's impact on public opinion in China

4:24 p.m., Oct. 22, 2012--Sanjiu Yan, dean of the College of Communication at East China Normal University in Shanghai and a renowned scholar on journalism and the online media in China, will present “Internet Development in China: Its Impact on Public Opinion” as the first speaker in the inaugural China Forum lecture series. The presentation will be held Friday, Oct. 26, from 4-5:30 p.m., in 116 Gore Hall on the University of Delaware campus in Newark.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Confucius Institute at UD.

Yan has published and edited several books, including A Study of TV News, On Economic News Coverage, A Brief History of China’s Social Media and A Study of News Media, and more than 30 major journal articles. Additionally, he has served as correspondent, editor and adviser to several news agencies, TV stations, newspapers and multimedia companies. Recently, he was invited to serve as special media adviser to Southern China News Corporation, a major media corporation in China.  

His presentation will kick off the new monthly series.

“One of the goals of the Confucius Institute is to help promote, as a platform, scholarly exchange between UD and Chinese universities and research institutes. One such initiative is China Forum, which is focused on various important aspects of Chinese culture and society, especially contemporary China, such as the economy, social reforms, urban affairs, news media, education, environmental issues, women’s status, foreign policy, cultural tradition, pop culture and films,” says Jianguo Chen, director of the Confucius Institute. 

“By bringing in internationally and nationally renowned scholars, specialists and researchers with expertise in China studies, China Forum aims to provide the University community and beyond with an opportunity to get to know China and appreciate its global importance as it grows to be a critical player in the world,” Chen notes. 

According to Chen, the inauguration of the China Forum lecture series is one of several activities that will help celebrate another important event: the second anniversary of the founding of the Confucius Institute at UD.
