Hire a Hen Internship & Job Shadow Program

By becoming an Internship or Job Shadow host, you can reconnect with the university, see your professional experience in a new light and make a direct and positive impact on the professional development of young students. In addition, your organization can benefit from the additional exposure gained through working with UD students. The goal of these programs is to create mutually beneficial experiences for the students and the UD employers, alumni and parent participants.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Offer a three to five-week internship during UD’s winter term, when more than 60% of UD students are available for full or part-time experiences throughout the country. The experience will help to expose a student to a career area of interest and will provide you with an eager intern to assist with projects for the month.

  • 2024 Winter Term Internship Dates: Monday, January 8, 2024 through Friday, February 2, 2024.

  • Dates for internship submission from employer: Monday, August 7, 2023 through Friday, November 3, 2023. All postings will expire Friday, November 17, 2023.

Students will be able to apply as soon as positions are posted and approved.

Employer/alum will manage the interview and selection process.

All internship opportunities will be posted in Handshake, the Career Center recruiting platform. The Career Center will send the designated representative a packet of applications from students interested in their internship experience. The packet will include each student’s resume and any other documents that you specify.

ALLOWED SCHOOL YEARS

ALLOWED MAJORS

All Majors

To ensure that an experience—whether it is a traditional internship or one conducted remotely or virtually—is educational, and thus eligible to be considered a legitimate internship by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) definition, all the following criteria must be met:

  • The experience must be an extension of the classroom: a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
  • The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
  • The experience has a defined beginning and end, and a job description with desired qualifications.
  • There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
  • There is supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of the experience.
  • There is routine feedback by the experienced supervisor.
  • There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support learning objectives/goals.

If your organization does not intend to provide compensation for internships, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the Fair Labor Standards Act as it relates to Internship Programs. Academic credit may legitimize an unpaid experience, some employers may require students enroll in our Experiential Internship course, UNIV 364, to gain credit as part of the internship experience.

For more information on how to gain credit for an internship experience click here

Best practices for a remote internship are very similar to those for an in-person internship.

  • Provide clear expectations to students starting with the work agreement.

  • Be sure to include information on how they should be logging their hours, how many hours should be worked each week, who their supervisor will be and how many times they will be checking in, etc.

  • Note any equipment they will need or that which will be provided by the employer at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the internship so that students can feel prepared.

  • Use the virtual onboarding process to set norms for connecting with students and uphold the guidelines for which they should be communicating during the summer.

  • Provide an opportunity for the interns to connect with their peers before they start to help them build community amongst themselves so they feel comfortable with others that are in their shoes during this unprecedented time.

  • Create opportunities for students to absorb the culture of your organization by interacting with those outside of their teams to help them extend their networks more broadly throughout the summer. Please see Handshake for additional helpful resources.

JOB SHADOW PROGRAM

The Job Shadow Program connects current University of Delaware students with alumni, parents and employers to explore potential career fields over Winter Session and in the month of June. This program is an educational and exploratory experience for students. A job shadow allows students the chance to examine a career area they know little about or deepen their knowledge and build professional networks in an already-chosen industry area.

Job shadow hosts have the option to host a student virtually, for a one-hour informational interview or for an in-person, full day, on-the-job shadowing at your place of employment.

  • In-person job shadowing allows students to gain real work experience by observing an employer or alum in their workplace for one day. Students may enjoy tours of your workplace, meetings with key members of your team and/or organization, learning about your specific career path and receiving career advice from someone currently employed in their field of interest.
  • Virtual Job Shadowing connects alumni and employers to students for one-hour informational interviews. Students can ask their host questions regarding a specific industry area, the job search process and the host's personal professional journey to gain insight into the world of work. The virtual job shadow experience offers hosts who are located outside of the mid-Atlantic region an opportunity to connect with UD students.

The Career Center will match job shadow hosts with students who expressed interest in their job shadow opportunity. Information collected from both the host and student during the registration process will be used to identify the best match possible. Please note that there may not be a match between a student and your job shadow opportunity. If a match does not occur, we are happy to connect you with additional student engagement opportunities.

In order to post a job shadow opportunity, there is certain information we will need to gather to include in the posting.

  • The job shadow host title & contact information
