LAB COORDINATOR
Context of the Job:
The principal/core job functions include providing a wide variety of operational, research, and administrative laboratory support services. Identifies, enhances and follows specific processes and procedures to maximize the efficiencies of the academic courses or research activities conducted in the laboratory; ensures the correct functioning of facilities and equipment. These positions require the exercise of independent judgment and discretion as well as the utilization of advanced technical and operational skills. The job duties listed below are an illustrative of those associated with each position. Classification is based on a combination of ALL of the elements listed for each position as well as the scope and complexity of the position.
- Coordinates operational activities in a research or instructional laboratory, providing support services to researchers, faculty, students and technicians.
- Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards.
- Provides support and assistance related to facilities and equipment issues and repairs.
- Coordinates the ordering, inventory, storage, and maintenance of supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of the lab.
- May provide lab instruction on an infrequent basis.
- Assists faculty with designing experiments.
- Limited staff supervision; provides guidance to undergraduate students.
- Serves on safety committee. Responsible for safety training and compliance.
- Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of technical/administrative experience in laboratory operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- In addition to the duties described in Lab Coordinator I, incumbents in this classification must have a thorough knowledge of and responsibility for complex laboratory operation. Understanding of organizational policies and procedures must be demonstrated by regular relating of information regarding department/University policies. Scope/complexity of laboratory operations is larger; greater laboratory work due to larger student, staff and/or faculty population; may have some budget responsibilities including purchasing of equipment and supplies.
- Typically teaches undergraduate lab courses.
- Designs/builds modifications to research equipment; develop instructional materials for undergraduate lab.
- Limited supervision; provides direction to graduate and undergraduate students.
- Chairs safety committee.
- Bachelor's degree and 3-4 years of technical/administrative experience in laboratory operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- In addition to the duties described in Lab Coordinator II, incumbents in this classification must have a thorough knowledge of and responsibility for complex laboratory operation. Understanding of organizational policies and procedures must be demonstrated by regular relating of information regarding department/University policies. Scope/complexity of laboratory operations is larger; greater laboratory work due to larger student, staff and/or faculty population; increased accountability for managing funds/budgets, and purchasing.
- Teaches undergraduate lab courses; may serve as backup to teach lectures for faculty.
- Designs/builds modifications to research equipment; develop instructional materials for undergraduate lab.
- Supervises teaching assistants/undergraduate researchers.
- Prepares research proposals; may write technical and/or administrative portions of the related to the lab and lab equipment.
- Develops and/or conducts safety training workshops.
- Bachelor's degree, Master's preferred, and four or more years of technical/administrative experience in laboratory operations or equivalent combination of education and experience.
