UD is honored to present this digital seal signifying our achievement as a Carnegie Community Engaged campus
On January 7, 2015, the University of Delaware was recognized nationally with the Community Engagement Classification from the distinguished Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1905 and chartered in 1906 by an Act of Congress, the Carnegie Foundation defines community engagement as “the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.”
UD’s Community Engagement Task Force submitted the University’s extensive application to the Carnegie Foundation in April 2014. The research leading to the development of the application identified more than 300 unique community partners that work with UD and over 375 examples of community projects. UD’s application and supporting materials are available here, as well as the task force’s final report.
One of the task force’s recommendations already has been enacted. A University of Delaware Community Engagement Commission has been established to build on the task force’s work. The commission is studying models and best practices of community engagement throughout the United States. The commission will develop goals, activities and assessments, and a structure best suited for sustaining and expanding the work of community engagement at UD. A report will be generated and submitted to the deputy provost for academic affairs in winter 2015.
