Transfer Admissions Requirements

If you’re thinking about transferring to UD, the best thing you can do is begin preparing early. Before you apply, it is crucial to review the requirements by major section below. Some majors are closed to transfers, while many other majors require a higher GPA and/or specific course requirements in order to be considered for admission.

Residence Life and Housing “Spring into Success” conference. The program is a 2-day conference “geared towards first year and transfer students with a focus on reinforcing strategies for success as a student at UD” [RLH Website]

How to Apply

1. Make sure you meet the admission requirements for your major.

2. Complete the online transfer application

3. Submit all college transcripts* (including college courses taken while in high school).

4. If you have not completed at least 30 transferable college credits at the time of application, you must also submit an official, final high school transcript or GED certificate. You may also submit your SAT/ACT scores (optional).

5. Pay a $75 application fee.

*Unofficial transcripts may be submitted to expedite an admissions decision. However, the transfer credit-evaluation process will only occur with official transcripts sent by the institution.

Important Dates

Fall Application Priority Deadline: May 1*

Spring Application Priority Deadline: November 1*

*Applicants submitting the application and any required materials after the deadlines may be considered on a space-available basis.

Transfer applicants are evaluated and notified by the My Blue Hen Home on a rolling basis beginning October for spring applicants, and beginning January for fall applicants. A physical letter will follow.  Beginning these months and once all materials are received, applicants will hear from the admissions office in about 6-8 weeks.* The admissions office will email you if you need to submit current semester final grades or other pertinent items (audition, portfolio) before an admissions decision can be made.

*Decisions for majors in the College of Engineering may take additional time since space availability needs to be determined at the end of each semester.

Application Review

All prior college coursework and final grades, including final grades in repeated courses, will be recalculated in a cumulative GPA as part of your admissions evaluation.

Since many majors are restricted and more competitive, please review the list of minimum transfer requirements under “Requirements by Major” to ensure your eligibility for admission.

These factors are also important:

· Transferability and quality of your college coursework

· Trend in your grade performance

· GPA in your most recent semester

· Grades in courses pertinent to your intended major

If you have completed 29 or fewer transferable college credits, your high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores will be heavily considered in the admissions evaluation. For more information on freshman admissions criteria, please review our Admissions Requirements.

May I submit unofficial transcripts?

Unofficial college transcripts may be used for admissions purposes, but if admitted, official transcripts will be required. UD will complete a transfer credit evaluation of your courses once you are admitted and after your official transcripts are received by the admissions office.

How will I know when my transcripts have been received?

You may check the status of your application via your My Blue Hen Home student portal.

Where do I send my college transcripts?

Transfer applicants may have official college transcripts mailed to University of Delaware, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 210 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE, 19716. The admissions office also accepts electronic transcripts via admissions@udel.edu. To be considered official, a transcript needs to be received by mail in a sealed envelope or electronically from the institution. If a transcript is received from the applicant, it is considered unofficial.

I applied as a freshman last year. Do I have to reapply? Do I have to resend my high school transcript and test scores?

Yes, you would need to submit the online transfer application. In addition, you will need to submit an official, final high school transcript. You will also need to submit a transcript with final fall grades from your current college or university when available.

Your SAT or ACT scores are still available in your previous file. You should also submit any official AP or IB test scores not previously sent.

May I apply to the Honors College?

Transfer students are not eligible to apply to the Honors College at this time. For additional information or questions contact honors@udel.edu or 302-831-1195.

May I apply to the Associate in Arts Program?

Yes, if you are a Delaware resident and if you have completed 29 or fewer transferable college credits at the time of enrollment.

I'm currently a freshman at another college. Do I apply as a freshman or transfer applicant?

Any student who graduated from high school and has since enrolled at a post-secondary institution must apply as a transfer applicant.

I'm a high school senior who has taken college courses while in high school. Do I apply as a freshman or transfer applicant?

If you are still in high school and have taken college courses, you apply as a first-year applicant.

Do I have to send a college transcript if those course(s) appear on my current college transcript?

Even if all your prior courses and final grades appear on another transcript, transfer applicants must submit all previous college transcripts. Your application will be reviewed once all transcripts are received.

My college does not calculate a final grade in a course I retake. Why does UD?

The admissions office recalculates all final grades, even if a course is retaken, to be consistent with UD’s grading policy for UD students.

I was admitted as a freshman. Does that mean I’ll be admitted as a transfer applicant?

It depends on your intended major. Some majors are more competitive and have higher minimum transfer requirements which you must also meet. Please review the “Requirements by Major” section for specific information.

I was denied as a freshman. Can I be admitted after completing one semester at another college?

Generally, if you were not admitted as a freshman, it’s best to reapply after completing at least 30 transferable credits. Otherwise, your final high school transcript and SAT/ACT scores may still be heavily considered in the decision.

Requirements by Major

Transfer students need to meet specific academic requirements to be considered for admission. Admission requirements vary by major. Meeting the minimum GPA for any particular major does not guarantee acceptance. Additionally, some majors are not available to transfer students. Please review the list to locate the status of your intended major before applying.

For majors with specific course requirements:

  • Check our Transfer Credit Matrix. If these courses at your institution are listed in the matrix, please note this when you apply.
  • If these courses at your institution are not listed in the matrix, please follow these instructions to have your course(s) evaluated.

If you completed the required courses, make sure to provide the final grade for the course once it is available. You can submit your application if the course is in progress.

Applicants who are attending or who have previously attended an international college/university must provide a credential evaluation from International Education Research Foundation (IERF). Please visit IERF’s website for instructions (how to request a Standard Application with a Detail Report, and where to mail your documents). IERF will send your credential evaluation directly to the University of Delaware. If you have a WES Course-by-Course evaluation completed before 2/1/2019, UD will accept this in lieu of a Detail Report from IERF. For complete information on how credits from institutions outside of the U.S. may be transferred, please visit the Registrar's Office page.

Just meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admissions. It depends on the number of completed credits, the transferability and quality of your college coursework, trend in your grade performance, your GPA in your most recent semester, and your grades in courses pertinent to your intended major. This is especially true for majors in the College of Engineering since space availability will determine how many applicants can be admitted

UD has partnered with Delaware Technical and Community College and other institutions to offer a number of Connected Degree programs. If you successfully complete the designated Connected Degree program at Delaware Technical and Community College, you may automatically transfer to the corresponding bachelor’s degree program at UD. When submitting your Transfer application, indicate your Connected Degree enrollment. You may apply to UD no sooner than the last semester of your Connected Degree program. You must complete all required courses and maintain the minimum GPA requirement.

See which connected degree programs are available at UD by visiting the Articulation Agreements website.

Students must apply for readmission in order to return to pursue a baccalaureate degree after an official separation from an undergraduate degree program at UD or after previously earning a UD undergraduate degree.

Readmission Information and Application

Next Steps After Acceptance

The admissions office will mail you an official acceptance letter and packet of information, as well as update your admission status on your My Blue Hen Home student portal. Please review your custom portal page regularly to keep track of pertinent fall enrollment information and to complete necessary tasks to finalize your enrollment.

If admitted, how much is the deposit and when do I have to pay it?

There is a $500 non-refundable deposit. For spring, admissions deposits are due by December 15 and May 1 for fall, or within three weeks from the date of your admissions letter (whichever comes later).

How do I pay my admissions deposit?

Once you're admitted, check your My Blue Hen Home student portal and click on the Admissions Decision Reply Form. Payment options are available via this form.

Can the admissions deposit be waived?

Written requests for deposit waivers may be considered for financial reasons only. Please email transfers@udel.edu.

May I request an extension on my admissions deposit date?

Written requests for deposit extensions may be emailed to transfers@udel.edu.

May I defer my entrance?

Admitted transfers may request a deferral for one semester. Not all deferrals are granted, but are usually granted for documented medical reasons or for military obligations. Other reasons may be considered. If granted, the student must pay the non-refundable $500 admissions deposit at the time the deferral is granted. Deferral requests may be emailed to transfers@udel.edu.

Are transfer students eligible for on-campus housing?

Transfer students are encouraged to seek options for housing as soon as they have accepted admission. Incoming transfer students who are not admitted as a freshman (students are considered a freshman transfer if they are admitted with 18 or fewer credits from another institution and graduated from high school within the last year, or are under the age of 18 at the time of admission) are not automatically guaranteed on-campus housing. Our ability to offer housing to transfer students will depend on space availability.

The University of Delaware does not have an off-campus housing office, but encourages local property owners to list housing on Places4Students.com. The Office of the Dean of Students offers a guide to off-campus living on their website. The site has helpful tools for students as they navigate the leasing process.

Transfer Student Housing

Are transfer students required to live on campus?

First-semester freshmen who transfer to UD in the spring semester are required to live on campus unless their permanent residence is within 30 miles of campus. Otherwise transfers are encouraged to seek off campus housing due to on-campus limitations. Please review the Transfer Housing website for more information.

Transfer Student Housing

I've already transferred a math course to UD. Do I still have to take the math placement?

All new transfer students must complete the math placement before attending New Student Orientation. This will not disregard any math courses taken at other institutions.

UD Math Placement

If I am accepted to an alternate major, will I be able to change my major to my initial major after I enroll?

Majors that are more restrictive for admissions usually have higher change of major criteria after you enroll at UD. If you have collegiate work not included in your initial review that may change your eligibility, the Office of Admissions can consider changes to your admitted major prior to the start of your first semester at UD.

Internal Transfer/Change of Major

My letter says I meet the academic qualifications for many of the majors at the University, but cannot offer me admission to the major I selected. What does this mean?

This means you do not meet the transfer admissions requirements for the majors you selected, but you may meet the requirements for other majors. Please review “requirements by major” if you wish to considered for a different major and email you request to transfers@udel.edu.

Why was I admitted to the Associate in Arts Program?

Delaware residents who have completed 29 or fewer transferable college credits, may be considered for the Associate in Arts Program if the quality of their high school, college transcripts and test scores closely align with the admissions standards of the Associate in Arts Program.

Transferring Coursework and Credits

UD accepts college credits from U.S. regionally-accredited, degree granting colleges/universities. Final grades must be C- or better, not Pass/Fail, and not remedial-level courses. Refer to our important note regarding Pass/Fail grades during the COVID-19 pandemic. A Preliminary Transfer Credit Evaluation is completed and posted on your My Blue Hen Home student portal 2-4 weeks after admission. For more information on transfer credits please refer to the registrar’s website.

Applicants who are attending or who have previously attended an international college/university must provide a credential evaluation from International Education Research Foundation (IERF) if applying to the Lerner College of Business and Economics, or to the College of Engineering.

Students applying to majors in all other colleges do not need to submit an IERF credential evaluation. If offered admission and you intend to enroll and transfer credit, an IERF credential evaluation will be required at that time.

The University of Delaware regularly evaluates courses from other institutions. Please use UD’s Transfer Credit Matrix to review the courses at your current or previous institutions to see which courses have already been evaluated and their UD equivalent courses.

Not at all! Courses that appear on the Transfer Credit Matrix have been previously evaluated by the respective UD departments and have been assigned equivalent UD courses. If you are strongly considering transferring to UD, you may email course description information and syllabi to the appropriate UD departments (e.g. English for English courses, math for math courses) so those courses not listed on the matrix may be evaluated. Follow these instructions to have your courses evaluated by the UD departments.

The Professional & Continuing Studies ACCESS Center routinely meets with prospective transfer students to discuss an unofficial evaluation of their previous credits. Please contact the ACCESS Center at 302-831-8843 or ACCESS-Advise@udel.edu, refer to their website for more information.

Academic Advisement and Career Counseling

After you are admitted and your Preliminary Transfer Credit Evaluation is posted on your My Blue Hen Home student portal, you may contact Theresa Coulter-Thurley, associate registrar for transfer services, at coultert@udel.edu to discuss how your previous credits may apply to your UD degree program.

Only your previous college credits will transfer, not your grades.

UD policy requires that at least 30 of your last 36 credits must be taken at UD. This is referred to as residency requirement. Certain majors may have additional residency requirements so it’s best to consult your academic department.

UD awards test credit for some secondary and post-secondary examinations and education programs. Official AP or IB test scores must be submitted to the admissions office in order to be considered in your admissions evaluation and to receive credit upon enrollment.
