One of the Program's assets is its central location in the Middle Atlantic Region. Fellows divide their time between the Museum and the University's campus in Newark, Delaware, but there is room in their busy schedules to explore.
Situated in the Brandywine River Valley and a few miles north of Wilmington, Delaware, the Museum is a half hour drive from Newark and close to major transportation links. It is an area with many fine museums, historic landmarks, gardens, dealers, and private collections.
Students are near the lush agricultural countryside of Southeastern Pennsylvania or the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay.

Downtown Philadelphia is about a 50 minute drive to the north; Baltimore is a little more than an hour south. New York and Washington, D.C. are about a two hour train ride from the Wilmington station, a regular stop on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.
Fellows regularly take advantage of the opportunity to do research in the region's libraries and special collections. The Hagley Museum and Library is a ten minute drive from the Winterthur Museum and the American Philosophical Society and the Library Company of Philadelphia are less than an hour away.

They can take in a big city show, investigate the waterman culture of the Delaware or Chesapeake Bays, escape to quiet country byways, or take in the many activities available to the public on a six hundred acre country estate.
