Field Study

Field-based learning is an important part of the Fellows' academic training. They take day trips to artisan's shops, auction houses, collectors' homes, dealers, manufacturers, and museums.

First year Fellows undertake field study in January during a course on English Design History. In early June they have a week-long field trip to the South, visiting sites such as Charleston, Winston-Salem, and Savannah. Prior to the start of the fall semester, they travel to New England locations such as Newport, Plymouth, Boston, New Haven, Deerfield, or Salem. These trips offer detailed, behind-the-scenes learning experiences on material culture and professional practices.

Second year Fellows attend Americana week in New York City. The Program pays for transportation and lodging for these trips.

Finally, some courses at the University of Delaware include field work for students studying architectural history, art history, early American craftsmanship, history, and vernacular landscapes.
